When I was pregnant with my oldest, I had bizarre cravings, like cherry tomatoes. Weird. Another crazy craving was the black bean burger from a fancy local burger restaurant. A big juicy, delicious burger called Brigitte Bardot topped with a pile of sauteed onions. Why am I telling you that? My son is turning 13 this summer. In Judaism, when reaching the age of 13 (The bar mitzvah age) the boy/girl has all the rights and obligations of a Jewish adult. So even though we are very secular, this is a significant and special milestone. It’s a really odd feeling, and sometimes I want to turn to him and say, “Hey stop you are growing too fast.”
As I was going through old pictures to make him a birthday collage, I saw a picture from the fancy burger restaurant. That picture sparked many happy memories and cravings…so I had to make these burgers at home. The recipe is originally from the “Pioneer Woman” with a few minor changes. And as Ree Drummond says:” I gosh darn love a good meatless burger.”

INGREDIENTS OVERVIEW

Black Beans, of course! I used canned beans in this recipe. One can of regular black beans and one can of seasoned black beans.

An egg: To bind everything together.

Bread crumbs: They give the burgers their hearty texture.

Chili or hot sauce: For a little heat.

Ingredients

For the burgers:

  • 1 14.5-ounce can of black beans, drained
  • 1 14.5-ounce can of seasoned black beans, dranied 
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder 
  • 2 tablespoons chili or hot sauce 
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • spray oil

For serving:

  • 6 hamburger buns
  • pickles
  • sliced onions and tomatoes
  • your favorite condiments

Instructions

Make the burgers:

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F/200°C.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spray with oil.
  • Place the beans in a food processor and process until they are mostly broken up, but with a few large pieces still visible (be careful it happens fast). Transfer into a large bowl.
  • Pour in the breadcrumbs.
  • Then add egg, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Stir until everything is combined, then add chili sauce.
  • Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes.
  • For the bean mixture, into 5-6 patties and place on the parchment paper.
  • Heavily coat with spray oil.
  • Bake for ten minutes on the first side, then flip and bake for ten more minutes.
  • Serve immediately on hamburger buns and your favorite toppings.
